I’ve just been read an overview of pdf.js, an experiment to find out if the ISO 32000-1:2008 Portable Document Format can be rendered using HTML5. It’s an interesting idea, and they’re talking about turning it into a Firefox extension in the next few months. It’s apparently a tiny bit faster and more stable than Adobe’s own renderer.
The project still has a way to go, you can’t select text at the minute for example as they’re using canvas, but they’re looking into using SVG to overcome this particular problem, at the cost of more overhead. The demo is really snappy and even though it’s only just getting started I think it’s got great potential and is definitely one to watch!
