OutMore was an application for users of OutdoorLads.com, an outdoor pursuits group. The purpose of the application was to increase participation of events by increasing awareness. Users linked their OutdoorLads account to their Facebook account via OutMore and the Facebook API.
The primary method of increasing awareness this was by notifying users on Facebook when their friends signed up to events on the OutdoorLads.com website. A cron job collected details of new event sign-ups, then processed and then sent using Facebook’s API. Users could also set preferences to filter notifications based on event type and region, and notifications were grouped by the system so users would not get annoyed by a constant bombardment of messages.
The secondary method of increasing awareness was instant sorting and filtering of events, which gave users much greater control and flexibility in finding events that they were interested in and was far more user friendly than the clunky Joomla-based OutdoorLads site.
It was a great chance to use Facebook’s API, not just for the technical learning curve but also because I really had to think about user interaction. The design of the site was kept quite minimal, using icons to highlight important information about events. The illustrations are by Simon Oxley, most famous for the original Twitter bird.
